About kalbelia dance
Kalbelia is one of the most popular dance forms of Jaisalmer, which is performed by the Kalbelian community, who were traditionally snake charmers. Women perform the dance and men play the instruments. A wooden wind instrument called Been, which is used by the snake charmers, is the main instrument used in this dance. Other instruments include dholak, sarangi, pakhwaja, harmonium and jhanjhar. The dance involves acrobatic steps with swaying and twirling elegant movements to the music, and the tempo increases gradually. Dancers wear special colourful dresses with mirror work and traditional ornaments. The music and the dance movements resemble the movement of snakes.
