About bada bagh
Bada Bagh, meaning ‘Big Garden’, is a historical garden of cenotaphs built in memory of the rulers of Jaisalmer. A monument or Chhatri was built for each ruler by the succeeding ruler, which was continued from 16th century to 20th century. Tablets inscribed with the names of the king and queen, and sometimes their statues, were also erected in the memorials. The oldest memorial was of Maharawal Jait Singh. The last one for Maharawal Jawahar Singh remained incomplete due to the sudden death of his follower, and subsequently this tradition of cenotaphs was discontinued. The garden also comprises of a dam and a tank, and a pillar known as Govardhan Stambh.
