  1. About ezhara ponnana festival

Ezhara Ponnana Festival is celebrated at Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple in Kottayam in the month of February / March. Ezhara Ponnana means ‘seven and a half golden elephants’. The festival involves a grand procession of eight golden elephants, seven of them have a height of two feet each and the eighth one is only one foot, hence counted as seven and a half. These golden elephants weighing 13 kg were donated to the temple by Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the founder of Travancore Kingdom. The Ezhara Ponnana procession of the eight golden statuettes is held on the eighth day night, which is accompanied by caparisoned elephants and traditional temple orchestra. The arattu ceremony is held on the tenth day.
