Chhapar Mela is a religious festival held in Chhapar village in Ludhiana on the fourth day of the month of Chaudas, which falls on September. On this day, the serpent embodiment Gugga Pir is worshipped. Gugga Pir was believed to be the God of serpents and by worshipping him people will be relieved from snake bites and skin diseases. Special rituals are performed on this day. The devotees scoop out earth seven times appealing the serpent god to protect them. Started about 150 years ago, it has become a major festival of the region with the participation of lakhs of people. Social organizations organize medical camps and langar during the festive days and political parties utilize it as a platform to convey their messages to the people.
