About vat purnima
Vat Purnima or Vat Savitri Vrat is performed by Hindu married women to pray for the long life of their husbands. It is celebrated to pay respect to Savitri for her devotion and determination to bring her husband back to life from the god of death. On the day of Vat Purnima, women wake up early in the morning, take bath and wear new dress and ornaments. They observe fast for the whole day and night and break it the next day. They worship Banyan tree and offer water, flowers and rice and tie cotton thread around the trunk of the banyan tree, and circumambulate it. The women bow low in front of their husbands and elderly people of the family. Savitri is worshipped as deity and the women listen to legends related to Savitri.
