Bohag Bihu or Rongali Bihu is the most important Bihu festival of Assam celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm throughout the state. It marks the beginning of harvest season and is also the Assamese New Year Day. It is celebrated for seven days in the month of Bohag (middle April). The first day is significant for cattles and farm animals. After taking them for a bath in the nearby waterbody, they are decorated with turmeric paste and black gram. Next day people wear new dress and visit friends and relatives, exchanging greetings and gifts. Third day, people worship their gods for blessings.
