  1. About vaikathashtami

    Vaikathashtami or Vaikom Ashtami is a twelve-day annual festival celebrated at Vaikom Mahadeva Temple situated on the banks of Vembanad Lake. Vaikom Temple is known as Dakshina Kasi (Varanasi of the South). Though it is a Shiva temple, Vaikathashtami is celebrated on the Janmashtami day of Lord Krishna in the month of November/ December, giving equal significance to both the deities. A grand procession is held on the Vaikathashtami day when the replica of the presiding deity is carried on the top of caparisoned elephant. Cultural programs, music, dance, folk arts and Kathakali performances attract thousands of devotees to this festival.
