  1. About ali ai ligang

    Ali Ai Ligang is a spring festival of Assam celebrated mainly by the Mishing tribe to mark the sowing of paddy. It starts on the first Wednesday of the month of Ginmur Polo, which usually falls in February, and continues for 5 days. After the sowing ceremony, a traditional dance is performed by the young boys and girls of the community which is an exciting event to watch. The dance involves rapid steps with flinging of hands and swinging of hips, and the dancers encircle the courtyards of the houses of the villagers. A grand community feast is organized in which rice beer called ‘Poro Aapong’, Pork and dried fish are served. During the festival days, certain activities are strictly banned, which include cutting of trees, fishing, and burning jungles.
