About onam festival
Onam is the most popular festival of Kerala, celebrated in the first Malayalam month Chingam (August-September) which marks the homecoming of King Mahabali. Legend says that under the rule of King Mahabali the people were very happy and prosperous. But the gods became envious of him, and as per their request, Lord Maha Vishnu took the form of a dwarf (Vamana) and using clever tactics pushed down the king to the infernal region called Patala. But he was granted permission to visit his beloved people once in a year during Onam. Onam is a grand festival that lasts for ten days with several cultural activities and it includes preparation of beautiful flower decorations (pookkalam), elaborate feast (Onasadya), boat races (vallam kali), dance forms like Thiruvathira kali, folk art forms like Puli Kali (Tiger dance) and Kummatti kali, and many more. Tourist week celebrations are conducted in every district. It is a great time for family get-together for the Keralites staying at different corners of the world.
