About float festival
Float festival is a popular festival in Madurai celebrated on the Full Moon day of Tamil month Thai at Theppukulam. Theppukulam is a huge artificial lake built by King Thirumala Nayak in the 17th century which has a temple of Lord Vighneswara on the island in the middle. On the festival day the idols of Goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareshwar are taken to the lake in golden palanquins accompanied by decorated elephants, horses, beating of drums, music, and the participation of thousands of devotees. The deities are worshipped on the banks of the lake and they are placed on a decorated float in the lake and ambulated around the Vighneshwar temple on the island. In the evening the island temple is illuminated and thousands of small oil-lamps are lighted near the lake. After fireworks, the float is again ambulated around the temple and taken back to their home temple in a grand procession.
