Chithirai festival is a popular festival in Madurai which attracts millions of visitors every year. It is mainly the celebration of the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi with Lord Sundareshwar. Lord Vishnu (Azhagar) travels from the Kallazhagar Temple to Madurai on a golden chariot to witness the wedding ceremony of his sister. Several rituals and ceremonies are involved such as Flag hoisting, Meenakshi Pattabhishekam (coronation), procession of goddess Meenakshi, celestial wedding, procession of temple chariots, festival to welcome Lord Kallazhagar, Lord Kallazhagar enters River Vaigai, Lord Kallazhagar’s return, etc. The festival is celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm, with the excitement of a real wedding function.
