About masimagam festival
Masimagam Festival, also known as Masi Pournami, is an important Hindu festival of Tamil Nadu celebrated on the Full Moon day of Tamil month Masi, which falls in the month of February / March. The main ritual on this day is the ceremonial bath given to the temple idols, particularly Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Goddess Shakthi, etc., in water bodies. After the ritual bath the idols are taken back to the temples in grand procession. Thousands of devotees participate in the ritual bath and procession. Special sweet pudding (payasam) is prepared in every home and offered to Moon God, seeking Lord’s blessings for good health and prosperity.

It is believed that a ritual bath on this day in the water bodies will liberate the devotee from the endless cycle of birth and death.
Once in 12 years, Masi Magam becomes more auspicious and is celebrated in a grand manner, which is known as Maha Magam or Maha Maham.
