About sabarimala festival
Sabarimala is one of the most famous pilgrimage centers in Kerala where the pilgrimage season starts from Mid-November and ends in Mid-January. During this season, millions of Ayyappa devotees from all over the country, irrespective of caste or creed, gather at this pilgrimage center to worship Lord Ayyappa, the presiding deity of the temple. Mandala Puja and Makaravilakku are the two important phases of the festival. Devotees wear black dhotis, walk bare foot, sleep on the floor and observe severe vrat for 41 days during this pilgrimage season. The most important feature of the festival is the observance of Makarajyoti, during the Makaravilakku festival. Women below 50 years are not permitted to visit the temple.
