About mannarasala ayilyam
Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple, an abode of serpent gods, is an internationally renowned temple located in Harippad in Alappuzha District. Located in a vast forest glade, the temple has more than 30,000 snake images along the way, on trees and in sacred grooves. Mannarasala Ayilyam is the main annual festival of the temple, which is held on the Ayilyam star of the Malayalam month Thulam (October / November). The head priest of this temple is a Brahmin lady, who is called as Mannarasala Amma and is respected as the Mother of Lord Nagaraja. The Ayilyam festival is celebrated for 3 days. On the first day, i.e., two days before Ayilyam, a ‘Maha Deepakaazcha’ with large number of lit-up lamps will be held. A grand feast will be held on the second day and Mid-day pooja will be performed by the priestess. On the third day, the day of Ayilyam festival, all the serpent idols in the temple will be taken in a grand procession to the illam, the family abode of the priestess. Mannarasala Amma, the priestess of the temple, will carry the presiding deity of Nagaraja to the illam for performing special Ayilyam pujas.
