About goncha festival
Goncha festival of Chhattisgarh is a chariot festival (Rath Yatra) celebrated with much enthusiasm in the Bastar region. Three huge chariots are made for Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra and the idols of these deities are taken in a grand procession to Gundicha Temple, which will remain there for nine days. The return of the deities to Jagannath temple is known as Bahuda Goncha. Several traditional customs are associated with this festival. The villagers make a mock pistol by cutting bamboo and use goncha as bullet to strike each other. Goncha is a kind of fruit which when used as bullet will not hurt others. It is just a thrilling and exciting mock encounter of the people that they enjoy a lot.
