    Jalandhar, formerly known as Jullundur during the British rule, is one of the oldest inhabited cities in Punjab. The word ‘Jalandhar’ literally means “inside the water” (Jal means water and Andhar means inside), and as the name indicates, the city is located on the irrigated plains between two great rivers Beas and Sutlej. Jalandhar was the erstwhile capital of Punjab before the establishment of Chandigarh after Indian Independence. Today Jalandhar has developed industrially and commercially in a rapid manner to become one of the wealthiest cities in Punjab. It is one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of leather goods and also famous for printing industry and sports goods manufacturing. This commercial hub of India offers several tourist attractions, including historical monuments, churches, temples, Gurudwaras, museums, gardens, etc., that attract a large number of tourists.

    Jalandhar railway station is an important railway station on Delhi-Amritsar Railway lane and is connected with major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Puri, Jammu, etc. Amritsar-New Delhi Shatabdi Express, JammuTawi-Pune Jhelum Express, Amritsar Howrah Mail, Amritsar-Bilaspur Chhatisgarh Express, Amritsar-New Delhi Express, Akal Takht Express, Pathankot Tatanagar Express, etc., are some of the important trains running through this station.

    There is no airport in Jalandhar. The International Airport at Raja Sansi in Amritsar is at a distance of 90 km from Jalandhar. Chandigarh International Airport is at a distance of 150 km. On arrival at these airports, one can hire a taxi to reach Jalandhar.
