Madurai, renowned as the Temple City of India, is the third largest city in Tamil Nadu and one of the most visited pilgrimage centers in the country. It is located on the banks of River Vaiga and is famed by the Madurai Meenakshi Temple. The history of Madurai dates back to 3rd Century BC. It was established by the Pandyan King Kulasekhara and was later ruled by Cholas, Pandyas, Madurai Sultanate, Vijayanagara, Madurai Nayaks and lastly by the British rulers. This cultural capital of Tamil Nadu is blessed with several tourist attractions and temples, and is known for its culture, architecture, cuisine and shopping. This pilgrimage town is always crowded with visitors and pilgrims throughout day and night and is fondly called as “Thoonga Nagaram”, which means “the City that never sleeps”. The city is well connected by air, rail and road and attracts a large number of tourists every year.
